Welcome to Philomath Academy
Vision
Philomath Academy is an equitable, safe, and inclusive community where every student is valued, connected, and celebrated for their individuality. We empower our learners through experiential problem-solving, career exploration, and real-world connections, preparing them to become passionate, contributory citizens, future leaders, and confident participants in an ever-changing world.
Mission
Philomath Academy provides a student-centered education that prioritizes individual growth, meaningful relationships, and future readiness. Through intentional collaboration, personalized mentorship, and real-world learning opportunities, we empower students to take ownership of their learning, develop essential life and professional skills, and move confidently toward success beyond high school.
Our School Community Commitment
The Academy values diversity and recognizes that our differences strengthen our community. Students are encouraged to be positive citizens of the Academy both inside and outside of the classroom by contributing to a culture of inclusion, responsibility, collaboration, and mutual support. We also believe that preparing students for adulthood includes helping them build professionalism, communication skills, self-advocacy, adaptability, and other essential soft skills necessary for success in college, careers, and life.
We believe school is not only a place for academic learning, but also a place where students learn how to positively contribute to the world around them. The Academy is committed to helping students develop the character, responsibility, empathy, and civic awareness needed to become respectful, engaged, and productive members of their communities beyond high school.
Purpose & Philosophy
Philomath Academy offers a flexible, high-quality alternative to the traditional classroom, tailored to meet the unique needs of every learner. Our program is designed not only to close educational gaps but also to provide meaningful academic challenges. By offering personalized pathways, we ensure that students who are ready to accelerate have the rigor and resources necessary to push beyond conventional boundaries.
- Diverse & Supported Learning: We utilize a research-based curriculum supported by teachers, mentors, and family partnerships to meet students exactly where they are.
- Accountability: Regular progress checks and daily communication ensure every student remains on track and continues to grow.
- Future-Ready Focus: We re-engage learners through career exploration, work-based learning opportunities, certifications, and real-world experiences that help students discover their strengths, interests, and post-secondary goals. Students are encouraged to build the academic, interpersonal, and professional skills necessary for long-term success after graduation.
Our Model
Our school utilizes a Workshop Model designed to foster independence while providing targeted support. Rather than sitting through passive lectures, students engage in a structured three-part daily flow:
- Mini-Lessons: Teachers introduce essential skills or concepts in a focused, high-impact format.
- Work Time: Students apply those skills through project-based learning, small group instruction, career-connected activities, or independent coursework.
- Closing & Reflection: Students summarize their learning, share work on projects, reflect on growth, and set clear goals for the next session. This structure allows us to differentiate instruction to a high degree. Whether a student requires one-on-one intervention or is ready for accelerated independent study, our model adapts to them. We emphasize student voice, active engagement, collaboration, and ongoing feedback to build lifelong habits such as self-direction, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, professionalism, and time management.
Curriculum & Pathways
Our curriculum is both flexible and rigorous. Coursework is delivered through a blend of teacher-led instruction, hands-on projects, career-connected learning experiences, and the Edmentum Courseware platform.
Instructional materials—including interactive lessons and hands-on assignments—are designed to support a range of learning styles. We encourage students to work closely with teachers to demonstrate their learning in ways that are meaningful to them. Whether preparing for college, entering the workforce, pursuing technical training, or building essential life skills, students are provided with the tools, guidance, and experiences needed for long-term success.
As a school, we focus on moving students forward while also addressing gaps in prior learning, with a strong commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school. A key part of our curriculum emphasizes career pathways, employability skills, social and soft skills, financial literacy, collaboration, communication, and real-world applications of learning.
Students participate in ongoing career and pathway exploration through goal setting, portfolio development, interest inventories, community connections, certifications, and reflection activities. Staff partner closely with students to build a living portfolio that showcases high-quality work, documents growth over time, identifies strengths and interests, and helps students develop a clear vision for their future.
GED
As an official GED testing center, Philomath Academy offers a dedicated pathway for students pursuing their high school equivalency. We provide comprehensive skill development and exam preparation across all four subject areas:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Science
- Social Studies
Note: All testing fees are covered for enrolled Academy learners.
Grading, Credit, and Pacing
While our environment is flexible, our standards remain high.
- Pacing: Students have the freedom to move at their own speed. If a student completes all semester courses early, they may begin the next course needed immediately.
- Mastery: A passing grade of 70% is required to demonstrate course completion.
- Accountability: If satisfactory progress is not made within the first four weeks of enrollment, the student's placement will be reassessed to ensure they are in the best environment for their needs.
Expectations & Responsibilities
Alternative learning is inherently self-directed. To find success at the Academy, students are expected to:
- Take Ownership: Actively engage in coursework and meet self-imposed and staff-directed deadlines.
- Communicate: Meet regularly with staff to set goals, review progress, and advocate for their learning needs.
- Contribute: Maintain a positive attitude and respect the dignity and rights of all community members.
- Professionalism: Develop habits that support future success by demonstrating responsibility, collaboration, communication, problem-solving, punctuality, and adherence to district policies while contributing to a safe, inclusive, and productive learning atmosphere.
